Budget Day is over. What can I expect in the near future?
As energy consumers, these are turbulent times and we know that better than anyone. Almost everyone has now run out of a permanent contract with fixed rates and is now at the mercy of the whims of the energy market. Fortunately, the energy suppliers and the cabinet are thinking about solutions, some of which were presented on Budget Day. Below is a small selection of important information that will affect you in the near future.
There will be a price ceiling on Gas and Electricity as of January 1, 2023. For the months of November and December 2022, you will receive 190 euros if you are a customer of the supplier on the first of these months and have your own electricity meter.
What is a price ceiling?
With a price ceiling there is a maximum price for electricity and gas. You do not pay more than this price for the first part of your consumption. That first part of your consumption is called the basic consumption. If you use more than the basic consumption, you pay your supplier's rate.
The price ceiling ensures that basic consumption becomes more affordable for many people. At the same time, it encourages energy savings and that is always good.
When will the price ceiling come into effect?
The price ceiling will come into effect on January 1, 2023. The government and energy suppliers need some time to arrange all this properly. This is a solution that must suit 7.5 million households.
What is basic consumption?
You can see a basic consumption as a consumption bundle. You pay a lower rate for consumption within the bundle. If you use energy outside the bundle, it is more expensive. This way, the energy we need anyway becomes more affordable. While at the same time we are encouraged to save energy.
The basic consumption has been set by the cabinet at 2,900 kWh of electricity and 1,200 m3 of gas. This basic consumption applies to everyone. So it doesn't matter how big your house(s) is.
What rate will I pay within the price ceiling?
The rates for basic consumption have been determined by the government as of 01-01-2023:
Electricity:
Up to 2,900 Kwh: Max 0.40 euros/Kwh
Above 2,900 KwU: Your supplier rate
Gas
Up to 1.200 M3: Max 1,45 euros/M3
Above 1.200 M3: Your supplier rate
Who does the price ceiling apply to?
The price ceiling applies as of January 1, 2023 to all households and companies with a small-scale connection.
Good to know:
This concerns connections that supply electricity and gas to addresses that are intended for living, working or staying.
The price ceiling only applies if your rate is higher than the established price of the price ceiling.
Does the price ceiling also apply to city heating?
There is currently no price ceiling for city heating (yet). The rate for district heating has not changed since January 1, 2022. Like every year, we expect an adjustment from the new year. We will inform you about this, and whether a price ceiling also applies to city heating, in December.
What happens to energy tax and VAT?
Energy taxes will increase again on January 1, 2023. VAT will also drop from 9% to 21%. These were temporary measures to keep energy affordable. The advantage of a price ceiling is that it provides better protection against further price increases.
All in all, a lot is still uncertain, but keep an eye on our website and newsletters because as soon as things become concrete or change, we will inform you.
